The Grape Varieties

      There are thousands different types of grapes each giving its unique taste and characteristic. Below are a few examples of red and white grape varieties which are popular.

The Whites

Chardonnay

Known as the king of white wines and originated from Burgundy, French. It is now grown in many countries vineyards with similiar climate conditioning.
     It usually kept in oak barrel to gain the spicy flavour of the oak.

Pinot Grigio

Used to make inexpensive wine suitable for everyday drinking as they are low in acidity and taste less complex when they are made with ripe grapes. Used to be called Rulander in Germany.

Riesling

     They taste less complex then the Chardonnay. Riselings tend to have high acidity content and a special flowery scent that characterist Riesling.

The Reds

Cabernet Sauvignon

This variety offer a great dept of favour and complexity when it is being aged. They are high in tannin which gave it a spicy aroma and flavour.

Merlot

Grown in many wine region. Merlot has a unique herbaceous aroma and are low in tannins and acidity. This make Merlot a early maturing wine. High quality Merlot are complex and take a long time to be aged

Pinot Noir

A type of red grape variety which is very sensitive to its envoronment and climate when being cultivated.Hence, the quality of the wine lies greatly on how these grapes are being grown.It produces wine that can be age for a long-term.
